We're greatly appreciative of all the people who took the time to enter our photo contest. We received so many fantastic submissions that narrowing down our favorite photos was extremely challenging.
After sorting through the many high-quality photo entries submitted in the past month, CSERC staff finally selected the winning photos in the Center’s 2019 Wildlife & Landscape Photo Contests for adults, and the top photos in the youth category!
First place in the Wildlife Category, Adult Division (and a $100 prize) was awarded to Rick Kimble, who took this stunning photo of a red fox. We love those expressive eyes!
Second place in the Wildlife Category, Adult Division, and $50, went to Sharon Anderson from Clayton, who managed to take this well-framed photo of two bear cubs.
For third place (Honorable Mention), Jim Hoagland, has won for the following photo of two Cassin's Kingbirds engaging in an intense discussion. We love the composition and the delightful contrast of yellow feathers in a blue sky.
First place in the our new Landscape Category, Adult Division was awarded to Fred Courter, for his striking photo of El Capitan. While many people try to capture the awe-inspiring character of El Capitan, we felt this photo stood out due to the intense colors and excellent framing.
Second place in the Landscape Category, Adult Division, was awarded to Dan Souza, for this great photo of Leavitt Creek. Great long exposure photography!
Honorable Mention goes to Peggy Edwards, for the following photo of a vibrant sunset. We're always excited to see a colorful Sierra sunset, and this photo in particular captivated our staff.
The winner of the Youth Category for Wildlife is Devin Chubb, who took this photo of a acorn woodpecker at age 13. The photo is crisp and eye-catching, and we know how hard it can be to capture photos of constantly moving birds up in the tree tops.
The Youth Winner in the Landscape category is Emma Hiller, for her photo of a water droplet. We appreciate her creative approach to nature photography, and this photo stood out for its interesting perspective.
Honorable Mention in the Youth Wildlife Category goes to Katelyn Hawthorne. We like the framing and colorful setting for this hummingbird photo!
Honorable Mention in the Youth Landscape category goes to Samantha Cutting for this photo of Eagle Meadows Point - we love photos of the high Sierras and it can be quite a trek to get out there!
All of the winning photos and most of the other entries will be used by CSERC staff in the science slide show presentations the Center provides to more than 5,000 students each year at schools in the Central Valley and across the foothills. Since 1990 CSERC’s free programs about water, wildlife, and forests have reached more than 150,000 students and members of community groups.
