Chad Lane of Manteca, CA took first place in the adult photo competition with his attention-grabbing picture of a chaparral whiptail snake that he photographed in Eldorado County. Natalie Hawks of Sonora sent in the top entry from a teen/youth photographer, winning in that category for the second year in a row. This time her photo shows a goldfinch, perched in early spring, blending with the soft, muted tones of its surroundings.
