We’ve finally gotten substantial rain, with snow in the mountains — a good reason to give thanks after the region has endured years of stressful drought. Streams are flowing, and water is soaking deep into the soil, allowing trees to produce healthy sap flows to help repel bark beetles.

While summer is the most popular time for outdoor recreation and exploring the region’s countless scenic destinations, fall and winter seasons offer opportunities to savor quieter times watching wildlife without the crowds.
