Dedicated Activist Made A Difference For Yosemite And Wild Places

Long-time activist George Whitmore (shown at far right listening skeptically to a Park official) spent decades participating in Yosemite Park matters on behalf of the Sierra Club.

For three decades, Sierra Club activist George Whitmore partnered with CSERC’s executive director John Buckley and others in jointly working for greater protection for wild places of the Sierra Nevada and better management of Yosemite National Park.

George was famous (as noted in the NPR news story) for his precedent-setting mountain climbing achievements. But for decades, what mattered most to George was his work to improve Yosemite Park management and better protect the Park’s iconic destinations. He was a strong voice for wilderness, and the long-term preservation of national forest roadless areas that are still wild but have no congressional protection or designation as formal wilderness areas.

George will be missed by the diverse community of interests who are tied to Yosemite Park and other precious wild areas of the Sierra Nevada.  The NPR story link below is worth viewing.
