Four bear cubs!! While black bear are one of the most frequent visitors to our cameras, this is the first time we have documented FOUR bear cubs! CSERC has been using wildlife cameras that are triggered by motion to survey for rare wildlife in Yosemite park and the Stanislaus forest for decades. On a few rare occasions we have been surprised by pictures of an adult bear with three young cubs, but four young cubs is a CSERC first! The reasons why it is rare to see four cubs with one mother are centered around how difficult it can be to raise four young as a single bear – that is a lot of mouths to feed! Black bear are the largest wildlife species in the Sierra Nevada. Typically a female bear will only reproduce every other year, unless her efforts were unsuccessful. These cubs are quite small and young, but hopefully their mother will be able to take advantage of the abundance of life this spring and raise healthy cubs!
